The historic river community is on the southwestern edge on the metro area, approximately 30 miles from downtown Minneapolis and St. Paul. Shakopee is a county seat and offers a wide range of diversity in residential opportunities. The southern and southeastern parts of the city with the new growth areas are becoming suburban. Industrial activity takes place in the eastern portion of Shakopee in a business and industrial park. Shakopee has become on of the metro area's most popular family recreational sites. Just minutes from its historic downtown are Valleyfair Amusement Park, the Minnesota Renaissance Festival, Historic Murphy's Landing, Raceway Park, Canterbury Park Horse Racing, and miles of paved nature trails for hiking and biking.
